How to Choose an eSIM Plan for a Europe Trip From the US

TL;DR: Pick a plan from three things: how many days you travel, how many countries you cross, and how much data you use. HOAM's own data guide gives rough ranges by trip length. This article walks through the choice. It does not rank providers; for prices, check the destination pages or the price comparison.

Step 1: Size by trip length

HOAM's guide to how much data travelers use gives these typical ranges. They are rough planning ranges from HOAM's own guidance, not guarantees, and your use will differ.

TripTypical use per HOAM's guide
2 to 3 days1 to 2 GB
5 to 7 days4 to 5 GB
10 to 14 days6 to 10 GB
3 to 4 weeks12 to 20 GB

Navigation is the biggest driver in that guide. If you stream video or upload a lot, use more, or save that for Wi-Fi. A HOAM Italy plan, for example, comes in sizes from 1 GB to 20 GB, so you can choose close to your estimate.

Step 2: List every country, including the day trips

Many Europe trips cross borders by train, ferry or car. A plan limited to one country can leave you without data on the other side. With HOAM, you choose your destinations when you build the plan, and adding another destination puts it on the same eSIM. See cross-border day trips that leave you without signal. Check coverage for every stop before you buy.

Step 3: Decide how much margin you want

If you are unsure, pick the next size up, or plan to reload. HOAM lets you reload the same eSIM from your browser if you run out. Nothing renews automatically.

Is unlimited worth it?

It depends on your use and the prices. Compare the unlimited plan's price and its fair-use terms with a metered plan for the data you expect to use. If you rarely come near your estimate, a metered plan with the option to reload can cost less. If you expect very heavy daily use, price an unlimited plan too.

Step 4: Prepare your phone and your home line

  • Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked (how).
  • Install on Wi-Fi before you fly (when).
  • HOAM's eSIM is data only. Decide how you will handle calls and texts on your US number, and ask your carrier what roaming costs for them (compare options).

Build a plan for your countries.
