Winter Sun Escapes: Thailand, the Canary Islands, Egypt and Dubai, and How to Stay Connected
When the days get short and grey, the most popular trip of the year is the one that goes toward the sun. These four destinations are at their best between November and March, warm without the punishing summer heat, and each is easy to reach for a week or two.
Here is what makes each one worth it, and what to know about staying connected there.
Thailand: the long-haul classic
Why go in winter: November to February is Thailand's cool, dry season, which means clear skies on the Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta) and comfortable temperatures in Bangkok and Chiang Mai.
Connectivity: your eSIM connects to AIS and DTAC, two of Thailand's major networks, with strong 4G and 5G in the cities and the main islands.
What uses data: Grab (rides and food), Google Maps, translation apps and ferry bookings between islands. Thailand is a trip you navigate with your phone, so don't skimp on data.
Going further? Many Thailand trips continue into Vietnam or Cambodia. Add them to the same plan, for example Thailand + Vietnam or Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia: the price is that of the most expensive country you pick, not the sum.
The Canary Islands: Europe's own winter sun
Why go in winter: the Canaries stay in the low-to-mid 20s °C all winter. Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote are Europe's most reliable winter warmth.
Connectivity: the Canary Islands are part of Spain, so you use a Spain plan. Your eSIM connects to Movistar, Vodafone and Orange.
What uses data: car hire and driving the islands' mountain roads (download offline maps, because signal drops in the deepest ravines), plus inter-island ferry tickets and beach-day streaming.
Egypt: the Red Sea
Why go in winter: the Red Sea coast (Hurghada, Sharm el-Sheikh, Marsa Alam) is warm and sunny all winter, with excellent diving and snorkelling, and Luxor and Aswan are comfortable to visit only in the cooler months.
Connectivity: your eSIM connects to Vodafone, Orange and Etisalat Egypt. Coverage is good in the resort towns and along the Nile; expect gaps in the open desert and out at sea on dive boats.
What uses data: messaging home, ride-hailing in Cairo, and resort Wi-Fi, which is famously unreliable. A data plan of your own is what keeps you online by the pool.
Dubai and the UAE: short-haul luxury
Why go in winter: from November to March, Dubai and Abu Dhabi drop from extreme summer heat to the high 20s °C, perfect for beaches, desert trips and outdoor dining.
Connectivity: your eSIM connects to du and Etisalat (e&), both with fast 5G across the cities.
Good to know: some internet calling services are restricted in the UAE. Check which apps you rely on for calls before you travel.
How much data for a winter-sun week?
A beach week is lighter than a city break: maps, messages, some photos and the occasional video call home. A mid-sized plan covers most travellers. If you are working remotely from the beach, or the kids will be streaming, size up. You can top up from your phone at any time if you run low.
Set up before you fly
- Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi, a day or two before departure. Your plan starts on first use abroad, not when you install it.
- Keep your home SIM active for SMS if your bank sends verification codes, and set the HOAM eSIM as your data line.
- When you land, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line. You are connected before baggage reclaim.
One eSIM for every escape
Your HOAM eSIM stays on your phone. Winter sun in January, a ski trip in February, a city break in spring: each trip is a new plan on the same eSIM, with nothing to reinstall.
