Do I Need a New eSIM for My Next Trip?

The short answer

No, not with HOAM. The eSIM you installed before your last trip is still on your phone. Your next trip is a new plan loaded onto that same eSIM: pick the countries, pick the data, pay, done. No new QR code, nothing to scan, nothing to install. Two trips means two plans and still one eSIM.

There is one exception, and it is about the phone, not the trip: if you've changed phones, the new phone needs its own eSIM. More on that below.

Why people expect to need a new one

Because that is how a lot of travel eSIMs work. With many sellers, a new destination means a new eSIM, a new QR code and a new line in your phone's settings. Some let you top up an eSIM you already have, but only with more of the same country or region. Go somewhere else and you're back to scanning a code in your hotel room.

So people who travel a few times a year end up with a settings screen full of dead eSIMs named "Travel", "Travel 2" and "Greece Sept", and no idea which one still works.

HOAM was built the other way round. The eSIM is the part you keep. The plan is the part that changes.

What stays, and what changes each trip

Stays from trip to tripNew every trip
The eSIM on your phone✓ installed once
Its eSIM ID (ICCID)✓ never changes
The QR code✓ used once, never again
Your HOAM account and order history✓
The destinations✓ whatever this trip needs
The data✓ from 1 GB
The 30 days✓ start when you connect at the destination

The plan expires. The eSIM doesn't. An eSIM that has run out of data isn't used up. It's waiting for its next plan.

How do I add a plan for my next trip?

  1. Go to hoamesim.com/reload.
  2. Pick every country on this trip and the amount of data.
  3. Sign in with your email (you'll get a code), and choose which of your eSIMs gets the plan. They're listed by the names you gave them.
  4. Pay. The plan goes onto that eSIM.

That's it. It takes about a minute, in the browser, with no app.

You can do this weeks before you fly. The 30 days don't start when you pay. They start the first time the eSIM connects to a network at your destination. Buy the plan the week you book the flights and forget about it.

Does it matter where I went last time?

No. Last trip's countries have no say in this one. Greece and Italy in May, Japan in October: same eSIM, two different plans. Each plan covers exactly the countries you chose for it, and a multi-country plan costs the price of the most expensive country on it for that data size, not the sum of all of them.

What does the eSIM cost between trips?

Nothing. When a plan runs out of data or reaches its 30 days, the eSIM just sits on your phone. Nothing renews, nothing is charged, and there's nothing to cancel. It can sit there for a year or three. If you fly once every couple of years, this still works.

When you do need a new eSIM

Be honest with yourself about these, because they're the cases that catch people out:

  • You have a new phone. A HOAM eSIM can't be moved from one phone to another. Once installed on a device, it stays with that device. New phone, new eSIM: buy one with your next plan and install it before you fly. From then on, the same rule applies: install once, reload forever.
  • You deleted the eSIM. If you removed it in your phone's settings, it's gone from that phone. Don't delete it between trips. It does nothing and costs nothing while it waits.
  • Someone else is travelling. An eSIM is per phone, not per family. Four travellers with four phones need four eSIMs. Each of those is then reloaded for that person's own future trips.

If none of those apply, you already have everything you need.

Is this really different from other travel eSIMs?

For a single trip, not much. Any decent travel eSIM gets you online when you land. Where the difference shows is the second trip, and the fifth. With HOAM you don't repeat the install, you don't pay for a region you're mostly not visiting, and you don't have a growing list of expired eSIMs to manage.

We won't pretend it suits everyone. If you travel once in your life, "install once" saves you nothing. If you want an app with a live usage meter and push alerts, HOAM doesn't have one: everything is in the browser and your account. And if your carrier's roaming pass is already included in your contract, use it.

What we'd do

Keep the eSIM installed and leave it alone between trips. The moment you book flights, reload it with the countries on the itinerary. When you land, turn on data roaming for the HOAM line and you're connected. Same as last time, with nothing to scan.

Already have a HOAM eSIM? Reload it for your next trip. First trip? Pick your destinations and we'll send the eSIM with the plan.

Häufige Fragen

  • Do I need a new eSIM for every trip?

No. A HOAM eSIM is installed once and kept on your phone. Every later trip is a new plan loaded onto that same eSIM at hoamesim.com/reload, with no new QR code and nothing to install.

  • Can I use the same eSIM for a different country than last time?

Yes. Each plan covers the countries you choose for it, whatever the eSIM was used for before. You can go to Greece on one plan and Japan on the next, on the same eSIM.

  • Should I delete my travel eSIM after the trip?

No. Leave it installed. Between trips it costs nothing, nothing renews, and nothing is charged. If you delete it, it is gone from that phone and you would need a new eSIM next time.

  • I got a new phone. Can I move my HOAM eSIM to it?

No. A HOAM eSIM stays with the device it was installed on. For a new phone, buy a new eSIM with your next plan and install it before you fly. After that you reload it for every trip.

  • When do the 30 days of a new plan start?

When the eSIM first connects to a network at your destination, not when you pay. You can add the plan weeks before you fly.

  • Does each person travelling need their own eSIM?

Yes. An eSIM is per phone, so four travellers with four phones need four eSIMs. Each one is then reloaded for that person's future trips.
