Best eSIM for India (2026): Prices, Networks, What to Pick

For a trip to India, a data eSIM on Airtel and Vi gets you online the moment you land, with no passport photocopies at a SIM counter. A HOAM plan for India starts at $3 for 1 GB, and two weeks of maps, ride-hailing and messaging usually fits in 5 to 8 GB. If you're staying for months, or you need an Indian phone number, a local SIM is the better choice, and we explain why below.

What does a HOAM eSIM for India cost?

Every plan lasts 30 days, and the days start the first time the eSIM connects in India.

DataPrice (30 days)
1 GB$3
2 GB$5
3 GB$7
5 GB$11.50
8 GB$18
10 GB$22
20 GB$43.50

Which networks will you be on?

A HOAM eSIM for India connects to Bharti Airtel and Vi (Vodafone Idea), across their regional networks from Delhi and Mumbai to Kerala, Rajasthan and the North East. Your phone uses whichever is stronger where you are.

Two networks aren't on the list: Jio, India's largest operator, and the state-owned BSNL. In cities and along the main tourist routes, Airtel's coverage is broad, so most travellers won't notice. In the high Himalaya (Spiti, Ladakh, remote parts of Sikkim), coverage is thin on every network, and you should plan for long stretches offline whatever you buy.

Having two networks is worth something. Airalo's India page lists Vi as its network (checked 8 November 2026). With HOAM, if Vi is weak where you are, your phone can fall back to Airtel.

How much data do you need in India?

A lot of Indian travel runs through your phone: Uber and Ola for rides, Google Maps through old-city lanes, train and flight updates, and WhatsApp for talking to hotels, drivers and guides.

A rough guide, based on typical use rather than HOAM's own data:

  • A week, light use (maps, messaging, a few rides): 2–3 GB
  • Two weeks, normal use (the Delhi–Agra–Jaipur triangle, social media, photo uploads): 5–8 GB
  • A month, or working online: 10–20 GB

Should you get a local SIM instead?

Sometimes, yes. Here's the honest version.

When a local SIM wins: you're staying more than a month, or you need an Indian number. Many Indian apps and services send a one-time code (OTP) by SMS to an Indian number, including food delivery and payment apps. A data-only eSIM can't receive those. If that matters to your trip, buy a local SIM, and use a HOAM eSIM to bridge the first day while it activates.

When the eSIM wins: a trip of a few weeks, where you'd rather spend the first afternoon in Old Delhi than in a SIM shop.

Visiting more than India?

India pairs naturally with Sri Lanka, Nepal and the UAE, which many travellers pass through on the way. With HOAM you don't need a second eSIM. You choose the countries on your route, and one plan covers them, priced at the most expensive country you choose, not the sum.

How that works out in practice, checked November 2026:

  • India and Sri Lanka cost exactly the same as India alone, at every size.
  • India and Nepal cost more: Nepal is the pricier of the two, so 5 GB is $32.50 instead of $11.50, and the largest size is 6 GB. If you're only in Nepal for a short trek, compare that with a separate Nepal plan for those days.

Setting it up before you fly

  1. Choose India (and any other countries) on hoamesim.com and pick a plan size.
  2. Install the eSIM at home over WiFi: scan the QR code or use the install link. It takes a couple of minutes.
  3. Leave it switched off until you land. The 30 days start on the first connection in India.
  4. On arrival, turn the HOAM line on and turn data roaming on for it. Keep your home SIM switched on for calls and texts, with its data off, so codes from your own bank still reach you.

The eSIM stays on your phone afterwards. When you go somewhere new, you load a new plan onto it; you'll never install another eSIM.

שאלות נפוצות

  • Which networks does a HOAM eSIM use in India?

Bharti Airtel and Vi (Vodafone Idea), across their regional networks. Your phone connects to whichever is stronger where you are. Jio and BSNL are not used.

  • Do I get an Indian phone number with a HOAM eSIM?

No. A HOAM eSIM is data only, so it cannot receive the SMS codes (OTPs) some Indian apps send to Indian numbers. If you need an Indian number, buy a local SIM; your own number keeps working for calls and texts at your carrier's roaming rates.

  • Is a local SIM cheaper than an eSIM in India?

For a long stay, yes: Indian mobile data is very cheap. But a local SIM usually needs your passport, visa and a photo at the counter, and activation can take hours. For a trip of a few weeks, an eSIM you install at home saves that time.

  • How much data do I need for two weeks in India?

About 5 to 8 GB covers two weeks of maps, ride-hailing apps, messaging and photo uploads. A week of light use needs 2 to 3 GB; a month or working online, 10 to 20 GB.

  • Can I use the same eSIM in India and Sri Lanka?

Yes. Choose both countries and one plan covers them. In November 2026, India and Sri Lanka together cost the same as India alone at every size.

  • When should I install my eSIM for India?

At home, over WiFi, a few days before you fly. Leave it switched off until you land. The 30 days start on its first connection in India.
